Bikewise cycle training safety + skills
The humble bicycle is enjoying a revival as the ultimate transport solution for short journeys. An increasing number of European cities have free bike hire schemes and over five million school children in the UK have now completed the up-dated 'Cycling Proficiency Test' (re-badged 'Bikeability') in the past three years. Kids are once again reclaiming the skills and confidence required to cycle safely and these new skills stay with them into adulthood .
Many parents (even grandparents) will have fond memories of taking their Cycling Proficiency Test at school and receiving the little triangular badge on a course with a history going back to the 1950s, when cycling was a necessity. The memories may not be of escaping the math lesson, but instead of riding our bikes learning valuable life skills that last a lifetime and now assist us whenever and wherever we may find ourselves cycling.
We operate a company that specialises exclusively in cycle training within Hong Kong. This allows our resources to flow into U.K. instructor training, quality bikes and specific risk management.
Our Instructors are chosen not just for the experience, knowledge and passion for cycling but for their track record teaching students of all ages and abilities.
Successfully debuted at Discovery College DB in collaboration with the PTA, Bikewise HK encompasses not only every aspect of the British course but also takes into account relevant conditions such as signage and road laws unique to Hong Kong.
Lessons are capped at twelve participants per session between two instructors enabling a safe, steady progression through the 'Drills'. We can offer a variety of lesson plans suited to different age groups from 5 and up, plus the flexibilty of teaching both co-curricular or extracurricular over the weekend.
To qualify for the course participants must be able to cycle un-aided on two wheels for twenty metres. Ideally we prefer students to attend with their own correctly sized bike and helmet. If they do not have their own we offer professional advice to help you make a purchase. Bikewise also sells carefully selected entry level bikes and 'U.S. CPSC' rated Giro and Bell helmets.
Bikewise Course Details
Level One Skills (Three Hour Course)
Subtly introduces road sense as a key life skill through a series of fun, outcome led cycling exercises on the playground. The students not only leave with a greater understanding of how their bike works but also with a set of skills that have become second nature ensuring safe emergency stops, slow speed skills, spatial awareness, observation and signalling.
Level Two Road (Six Hour Course)
Places all the Level One Skills in a real-time road traffic environment; participnts will learn how to negotiate not only common road junctions but to confidently interact with other road users along the way. All drills are outcome led and are practiced until perfected.
At the end of each session parents are given an evaluation form on their childs ability with recommendations on areas they may need to practice on as well as professional advice on equipment purchase and bike fit.

Feedback
"Just a quick one to say both Kelsey and Joshua had a great time at the BikeWise course and came home very proud with their certificates. Wayne said the instructors were particularly good at working with the kids and explained things well, especially when it came to the safety aspects of their bikes.
Well done on organising this for the school."
Cheers, Adair
"From all accounts the Bikewise course was a huge success, and it is the feedback from parents and students that will get the momentum going for future lessons. You might want to include some quoted feedback when you next advertise.
Thanks for all the hard work here. Thats nearly 40 students now with hopefully greater cycling safety awareness and attitudes."

"I wanted to let you know how valuable Isabella found the cycling proficiency course at DC on Saturday. Today she has been cycling both more confidently and more carefully on the roads where we live in Mui Wo. Crucially, the instructors managed to show her, much better than I could, how to slow down, look behind and indicate before turning off a busy road. Cycling for us is a necessity not a leisure activity and it is good to know that Isabella now has a much better understanding of the safety issues entailed.
Thank you for your work in setting up the training and also to Discovery College for facilitating it. Please pass my sincere thanks to the instructors too."
Kind regards
Amanda
