The humble bicycle is enjoying a revival as the ultimate transport solution for short journeys. An increasing number of European cities have free bike hire schemes and over five million school children in the UK have now completed the up-dated 'Cycling Proficiency Test' (re-badged 'Bikeability') in the past three years. Kids are once again reclaiming the skills and confidence required to cycle safely and these new skills stay with them into adulthood . Many parents (even grandparents) will have fond memories of taking their Cycling Proficiency Test at school and receiving the little triangular badge on a course with a history going back to the 1950s, when cycling was a necessity. The memories may not be of escaping the math lesson, but instead of riding our bikes learning valuable life skills that last a lifetime and now assist us whenever and wherever we may find ourselves cycling. We operate a company that specialises exclusively in cycle training within Hong Kong. This allows our resources to flow into U.K. instructor training, quality bikes and specific risk management. Our Instructors are chosen not just for the experience, knowledge and passion for cycling but for their track record teaching students of all ages and abilities.Successfully debuted at Discovery College DB in collaboration with the PTA, Bikewise HK encompasses not only every aspect of the British course but also takes into account relevant conditions such as signage and road laws unique to Hong Kong.Lessons are capped at twelve participants per session between two instructors enabling a safe, steady progression through the 'Drills'. We can offer a variety of lesson plans suited to different age groups from 5 and up, plus the flexibilty of teaching both co-curricular or extracurricular over the weekend. To qualify for the course participants must be able to cycle un-aided on two wheels for twenty metres. Ideally we prefer students to attend with their own correctly sized bike and helmet. If they do not have their own we offer professional advice to help you make a purchase. Bikewise also sells carefully selected entry level bikes and 'U.S. CPSC' rated Giro and Bell helmets.Bikewise Course Details Level One Skills (Three Hour Course)Subtly introduces road sense as a key life skill through a series of fun, outcome led cycling exercises on the playground. The students not only leave with a greater understanding of how their bike works but also with a set of skills that have become second nature ensuring safe emergency stops, slow speed skills, spatial awareness, observation and signalling. Level Two Road (Six Hour Course)Places all the Level One Skills in a real-time road traffic environment; participnts will learn how to negotiate not only common road junctions but to confidently interact with other road users along the way. All drills are outcome led and are practiced until perfected. At the end of each session parents are given an evaluation form on their childs ability with recommendations on areas they may need to practice on as well as professional advice on equipment purchase and bike fit. If you would like more details on how 'Bikewise' can directly benefit your school or organization please contact: steve_crosscountryhk.com for more information.Feedback"Just a quick one to say both Kelsey and Joshua had a great time at the BikeWise course and came home very proud with their certificates. Wayne said the instructors were particularly good at working with the kids and explained things well, especially when it came to the safety aspects of their bikes. Well done on organising this for the school."Cheers, Adair "From all accounts the Bikewise course was a huge success, and it is the feedback from parents and students that will get the momentum going for future lessons. You might want to include some quoted feedback when you next advertise. Thanks for all the hard work here. Thats nearly 40 students now with hopefully greater cycling safety awareness and attitudes."MarkBeach(Principal) "I wanted to let you know how valuable Isabella found the cycling proficiency course at DC on Saturday. Today she has been cycling both more confidently and more carefully on the roads where we live in Mui Wo. Crucially, the instructors managed to show her, much better than I could, how to slow down, look behind and indicate before turning off a busy road. Cycling for us is a necessity not a leisure activity and it is good to know that Isabella now has a much better understanding of the safety issues entailed.Thank you for your work in setting up the training and also to Discovery College for facilitating it. Please pass my sincere thanks to the instructors too." Kind regardsAmanda

Having an instructor put you right drastically reduces the likelihood of bad habits & broken bones by far. We take training back to the absolute basics of bike riding starting with a proven framework of balance skills taught by experienced & qualified MTB instructors. Not every trail in HK is geared up for beginners so we make sure we take you to areas suitably challenging but not overly intimidating in terms of your personal skills development.Having a lesson using our bikes and equipment is also a great way to get a taste of Hong Kongs fastest growing outdoors activity before you take the plunge and dish out thousands on a sport youre not 100% sure youre going to like (although 95% invariably get hooked early on!). We have both Full Suspension models and Hardtail bikes in a variety of sizes as well as being agents for HK based Chiru bikes. Not only do we offer sound advice on bike & equipment purchase we can also show you how to set your new bike up correctly and look after it thereafter.Intermediate RidersFor those with previous riding experience but still keen to learn new aspects of mountain biking whilst enjoying a guided trail ride we offer sessions in the form of a guided skills ride. Typically this may involve an A-B or circular route stopping at various challenge areas to practice along the way:- A flight of steps down, a slippery tree root section, stream crossing or building confidence with a view to increasing speed through a certain trail section etc.. The majority of our riders fall into this category some having progressed from complete beginners & some new to the HK scene entering at an intermediate level. Over several sessions regular clients see big improvements in fitness, skill and confidence as we venture onto more challenging trails.Experienced RidersWith eighteen years experience mountain bike riding in HK alone you can pretty much guarantee Ill be able to take you somewhere new and exhilarating every visit. Just let me know your current fitness level, previous riding experience, the type of riding you enjoy the most, any other relevant info like your height if your hiring bikes and the type of bike you would normally ride and Ill endeavour to put together a truly great ride for you.For those seeking specific race training we can help you up the ante leaving your riding & race buddies trailing in your wake. The format is similar to the intermediate sessions with the added challenge of learning to master some seriously difficult technical sections that could potentially shave minutes off your lap times; technical climbs, staircases up, rock strewn trails, steep twisty down-hills its all possible to ride with a little practice. Depending on your desired goal we can also build in both endurance and interval type training as part of the ride session. GroupsIf you come to us with your own group were more than happy to take you out, unfortunately we do not organize group rides ourselves. Mountain biking in HK can be a hugely challenging activity for some and a walk in the park for others. This doesnt always make for very effective teaching when you have a mixed bag of riders with some feeling theyre left behind and some ending up frustrated at waiting for others. One service we do offer is to recommend a rider whereby we give you the option of sharing your ride with a similarly skilled rider thats been out with us previous. A good few friendships have been forged this way over the years and were only to happy to see the MTB community grow because of this. For larger groups (eight riders & over) including corporate & school enquiries please do email for further details as we can offer tailor made packages and days out at reduced rates.Sorry we don't do bike-only rentals.
